ILLUSTRATOR: Combining Shapes

First, I drew a rectangle in the center of the page. Then I changed the color to a nice orange. Next, I drew a star and put it over the rectangle. Then I selected both shapes and went to "Window" and chose "Pathfinder." Then I hit the "Subtract" icon and the star subtracted within the rectangle. Then I drew a polygon and put it right in the center of the star. After that I clicked the rectangle and drew two skinny rectangles. I dragged them on top of the polygon and made them cross each other. Then I went back to "Pathfinder" and subracted it and it left an X on the polygon. Then I drew another polygon and put it on the right top corner of the rectangle. I went back to "Pathfinder" and hit the "Add" icon and it merged into the shape. After that, I drew another star and put it in the polygon and then I drew a spiral and put it on top of the star. Then I selected the star and the spiral and went to "Pathfinder" and hit the "Add" icon and it combined those two shapes. Then I selected them again and went to "Pathfinder" and hit the "Subtract" icon and it made a weird shape. That's how I ended up with that weird design.
